Beyond the fact that smoking is an addiction, my friends that smoke don’t imprison children in camps and cheer on fascism. Slightly different. Believing covid is a hoax and telling it to millions of easily duped people is somehow not the same as nicotine addiction. https://twitter.com/ibrahimpols/status/1312208186187759617
American Liberals have this need to show grace and show they are “better” than the right wing by being nice. The right wing does not do the same. I cheered when Milosevic died and I had a celebratory coffee when Krajisnik died. They were war criminals, they don’t deserve grace.
It’s strange to go from “Trump will go down as a modern history’s version of Hitler” to “we shouldn’t be mean to Hitler about the fact he’s sick.” People are suffering, in poverty, losing their loved ones because of Trump, why should he get grace he doesn’t bestow on his people?
The thing is; American Liberals don’t even mean it. They’re happy he’s sick and they too are probably hoping he dies a swift death and the election goes to Biden. But it’s about the performance of it all. Performative kindness in the face of fascism does nothing.
I’m not saying people have to be openly mean about it or celebrate it. But lecturing those who are expressing schadenfreude about Trump getting a taste of his own medicine seems like a waste of time when thousands are dying because of Trump’s policies.
