A thread of everything that’s happening in Kamchatka, Russia and why it’s important to talk about it now. If you are a native English speaker, I’m practically begging you to retweet this. #Kamchatka #PacificOcean
An environmental disaster is happening in Kamchatka.

The Pacific coast is poisoned with chemistry. Surfers have corneal burns, nausea, dizziness.

The shore is dotted with the corpses of bottom animals.
tw // dead animals
The water color is yellow due to the leakage of petroleum products and phenols.

The levels are exceeding the permissible norms for petroleum products by almost 4 times. In addition, the maximum permissible concentration for phenols in the ocean is 2.5 times higher.
THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

Not only the fish are dead, but octopuses, mussels, sea urchins, etc. There are even dead seals. This is truly heartbreaking.
THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. Television and state media are silent. The source and scale of the disaster have not yet been determined. Fishing in the area continues as if nothing had happened.
THIS IS THE PACIFIC OCEAN. IT CONCERNS ALL OF US. THERE’S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT NOW, OUR ONLY DUTY IS TO SPREAD INFORMATION. PLEASE RETWEET THIS. MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT IT MIGHT PUSH THE GOVERNMENT INTO INVESTIGATION OF THIS CATASTROPHE.

THERE IS NO PLANET B.

Some russian media has finally started to address the situation. This new article here says that specialists have selected samples of seawater, atmospheric air and sand, as well as other verification measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of what happened.
Also, the head of Kamchatka went to Khalaktyrsky beach, where the water was contaminated. He promised that those officials who kept silent or embellished the situation would be fired. He noted the country's lack of an environmental accident monitoring system.
An administrative case was opened (FINALLY!!) under the article on violation of economic activity in the coastal zone. Yarovaya (a Russian politician) noted the improper work of local supervisory authorities and the unorganised study of water samples
