How to be an ally if you’re an UC individual; a thread.

1. If you organise an event, ensure that majority of the people, if not all, taking part in it belong to the Dalit community, especially women and the LGBTQIA+
It’s their fight and they must be given the space to speak.
2. If you are at a protest, raise your voices but only to grab attention and then let the Dalits, especially the women and LGBTQIA+ be heard. Do not speak over their voices, do not shout slogans over them, let them speak because if you don’t then you’re curbing their voice too.
3. You might face a lot of issues in your life but if you’re UC then you’ll never be asked to not enter a temple or a public place due to your last name. Your merit will not be questioned because you belong to a certain caste so you might witness their pain but you don’t live it.
4. If you’re an UC individual who is organising or taking part in any event, irrespective of it being in person or online, make sure everyone who is presenting and organising is well educated about the issues.

5. When you talk about leaving the nation, that is borderline, if not totally, a classist statement.
I completely understand wanting to leave the nation when women safety is a pressing issue but majority of the Dalit community, cannot even consider it as an option.
6. Amplify the voices of the community and let them express their woes, especially the women and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Educate yourself about caste based oppression.

7. Please stop harbouring the false belief that you choosing to speak up for the Dalits takes away your privilege. The surname you have grants you the privilege.
It only further enforces the fact that you have a platform to speak up without having to face repercussions

8. If you’re an individual who regularly participates in Model UN and debates in favour of human rights where the incentive for your well researched arguments are awards, I really hope that you realise that if you speak now then the incentive will be protecting the Dalits.

9. If you are UC, you are privileged by default and said privilege increases if you’re a cis-het UC male.
If you can find the time to post about birthdays, football transfers, promoting entrepreneurial ventures, and more then you can easily educate yourself and others.

10. Do not easily believe any political party claiming to be supporters of Dalits, they are capitalising on the issue.
A particular party claiming to be the voice of Dalits have a statue of Manu in the HC of a state where they are in power.
Speak up but against oppression.
