cr: autumn reread! I didn’t like this much on the first read through because I was expecting a vaguely different story. I’m curious to see if my opinion will change now that I know where the story is leading!
lol caveat that I only remember the very bare minimum but I do recall this being too fluffy for my taste. but rn I could use some cutesy fluff
so from the get go: the writing style is so much fun and I love how the author managed to make painting engaging to actually see happen on screen and such a big part of how Isobel interacts with the world. her being a painter is important to her character and personality!
that may seem like a low bar but the last few things I’ve read and watched all seemed to have an issue with the narrators not behaving as if they actually have the lived experiences they’re meant to. their backgrounds didn’t effect their personalities or worldviews
oh also fae are oversaturated and boring now etc etc but I do love the otherness to them in this book. the many little rules to everything are great
Gladfly’s apparently meant to be young and pretty or whatever but I can’t not imagine an old man for some reason. the name just gives me old man vibes
this specific flavor of sensibility in the face of the fantastical reminds me of Alice in Wonderland a bit. it pops up pretty often in this book
picking this back up as a palate cleanser. I need to just like... make myself stop thinking and relax with something fluffy omg
adorable ❤️
so this is really funny... but simultaneously anticlimactic in a way. idk Rook’s intro here doesn’t work for me dramatically, which is how I feel about a lot of this book. it’s just vaguely off kilter and not Enough wrt high drama.
I like this scene where he’s just being super confused about human craft and poking through her kitchen but like... not now! build him up first *then* have him be confused and silly as a punchline!
(this is not an objective issue ofc just my personal taste)
LOL
I like the moment where she finally identifies and paints human sorrow in his portrait more than I did on my first read of this, but I’m also too pedantic for this concept lol
What does “human sorrow” mean! Are fae textually unable to feel? Is it damning bc only a human could’ve taught him this? Do Isobel’s portraits have some sort of power or is the drama legit just over a good likeness?
This drama makes no sense to meeee
I just watched Labyrinth and the Princess Bride so maybe I’m in a better frame of mind for this now lol
The curtesy thing she does is funny lol. In general I like the tenacity and resourcefulness, it’s fun characterization. She’s just doing *anything* she can not to go with him.
LOL
