Voting done! In a move that won't come as a surprise for longtime readers, but will no doubt make me a pariah among occasional or new ones (or those who haven't been paying attention over the past three years) for the first time ever I gave my party vote to the @NZGreens. đź’š
There's plenty of reasons behind my move this election and why I'm being public about it. While I don't agree with everything the Greens have put forward policy-wise, I've found myself agreeing with a lot of what they've been proposing over the past few years.
As many of you will have noticed, I have issues with the current leadership of the National Party and some of their policy positions (to be fair they're doing well on some parts too, e.g. more rail). But ultimately I couldn't bring myself to party vote blue this time round.
On the electorate side, after much agonising & lots of discussion with Renee over the last week about where I was struggling with things, I ended up voting for @NZNationalParty's Tim Costley. Don't agree with some of Tim's stances, but I know he'll fight tooth & nail for ĹŚtaki đź’™
On the referenda I was two yes votes. Having lost people close to me who had terminal illnesses I've seen both sides of how people think at the end, but ultimately if I'm in that position I'd like to at least have the option for me to consider.
On cannabis - prohibition isn't working by any stretch of the imagination and I believe this will provide a much safer and better regulated way for people who want to use cannabis to do so than the current wild west black market approach.
On the turnout side, there's a good stream of people coming into the polling booth and things moving quickly. Staff were lovely, social distancing, contact tracing, and hand sanitiser all in place too. Hadn't received my EasyVote card yet.
Anyway, however you're voting please get out there and vote. It's your voice, make sure you use it!
As a postscript, I'll add that the reason why I didn't party vote @nzlabour as you may expect seeing as I was departing blue this time round is policy wise Lavour essentially just National's approach with a few tweaks here and there. Hope Greens can push them to do more.
