2020 NHL DRAFT RANKING 🏒

Evaluating prospects differently:

While talent and mobility are essential, I believe it’s competitive spirit and hockey intelligence that turns good prospects into great NHLers.

From that premise, this atypical Ranking was born.

[method in thread]
The following elements were scored and weighted in order of priority.

1. Heart
2. Brain
3. Hands
4. Feet
5. Physique

The resulting grades were then adjusted with the following criteria.

Handedness:
Right > Left

Position:
C and D > W

Maturity:
Early birthday > Late birthday
That’s how the order was established.

Final results were also turned into predictions. Risky proposition, but I didn’t want to play it safe with fuzzy ranges and tiers.

Evaluation methodology:

Read all publications from trusted online ressources (tweets, articles, guides, etc.).

Evaluate and rate players’ attributes on video (games streaming, shift-by-shift, highlights).

Compare, recheck and weight scores. Adjust results. Predict NHL future.
Heart and Brain are not related to the personal determination, character, courage or intelligence of players in everyday life. It has nothing to do with the players as people. I only assess what I see on the ice in the context of hockey games.
Heart refers to intensity, consistency, persistence, fearlessness, going to the rough areas, hounding the puck, taking it to the net, backchecking, shotblocking, moving the feet, not cheating, accepting hits to make plays, and so on and so forth. Good old eye test here.
Physique refers to Actual size and Growth potential. It is calculated from Height, Weight, and Actual vs Pro BMI. How the players use that size, their physical game, is taken into account in the Heart category.
In order to avoid recency bias and uneven comparisons, post-pandemic viewings and hindsight were not taken into account in this Ranking.

We have to keep in mind that most players have improved their game and bulked up since March, but many have yet to have a chance to show it.
