I had an intense conversation with a colleague about grading. I don’t give 0s or penalize late work, and I give 2nd chances. Their argument was it is not fair to other students who turn their work in on time, and I am not preparing them for the workforce. I need backup. Anybody??
I explained the academic research, real world application, and my classroom, but the issue of fairness to the “rule followers” kept emerging. I explained that rewarding behavioral compliance and assessing academics should be separate issues. Thoughts? Chime in for or against.
As I read through the comments, I want to add two things. 1) I appreciate the responses. Some disagree and some agree. 2) When I said a second chance, I meant everyone gets it. Whether you made a 90 or a 50, ALL students get another opportunity to improve. I take the highest try.
