I'm going heavy on grabbing examples from my students' textbooks this term and I'm currently scanning for circumstances so thought I'd tweet some soft gaze observations as I go because they're kinda interesting.
Physics textbook: heavy on the location: place. NOT SURPRISING because this chapter is on forces. It's also about where and in what direction. Both where in the text, and where in the problem.
Also coming across some contingency: conditions, not only for the problems themselves, but for the instruction of WORKING THROUGH the problems. The pedagogic voice is interesting to identify.
Calculus textbook: I am fascinated by this one because it's REALLY FRIENDLY but does not fall into the trap of grammatical complexity to make it speech-like like I've seen some do. Interesting circumstances: lots of manner: quality, often about choices of concepts and methods.
