THREAD— An Analysis of Jungkook’s Vocals in the Savage Love Remix
So in the intro here, Jungkook makes use of his falsetto, chest, and head voices. He transitions easily between those three. He starts off in a stronger chest voice, but then moves to his head voice - no breath - for the “did somebody” part.
Then he’s back in chest again for the word “Break.” He ends that line with a bit of breath on “Heart” and then continues this pattern. He sings the chorus this way as well.
He makes use of more breath on the lines “but I still want that” and then the “la-love.” So in just this intro and the chorus, he’s showing off three different registers and his ability to move smoothly between them.
In singing, this is called having a “connected voice” - Jungkook has trained his voice to flow smoothly from chest to head voice or chest to falsetto and back without breaks. He also does a great job keeping his head voice strong when he comes up from his chest voice.
In the pre-chorus, Jungkook starts the “Eh” in “Every” with some breath, which helps him handle the tricky “ae” vowel there. He then goes into full chest voice with some really clean and powerful runs.
I really love that run on “try”, and I like that he uses a sharper cut off on “stay”, which really brings some emotion and desperation into this song. He then uses that as a jumping point to go into the chorus again with a very strong chest voice on “Savage Love.”
And of course, Jungkook never does anything half way so there’s some echoing and harmonies in here too, particularly on the “did somebody” part. Again, he uses his chest, head, and falsetto for the chorus, switching easily.
He adds the most breath at the end of the chorus and on the “la la love” parts, giving a sort of sultry sound to the breakdown of the chorus and giving the listener a way to come down from that stronger chorus.
On the line “You could use me”, he starts with more breath but then flips into more of a pure chest voice on “use” to emphasize it. There’s also a great run there.
In the last chorus, he does the same thing with his chest, head, and falsetto, but there are some really nice high adlibs. I’m especially impressed by the “Savage love, baby” adlib in the back, which he sings in a high mixed voice, similar to how he does the bridge in ON.
If you’re not familiar, mixed singing is just mixing the head and chest voice together. Singers can use mixed voice to reach higher notes in a healthier way, without pushing chest or straining. They can usually play with how much chest or head they use on the mix.
Here Jungkook’s mixed voice is head voice dominant, which is really fitting to match Jason Derulo’s style. That sort of mixed tone is very useful in r&b and pop singing.
I think Jungkook does a great job matching Derulo in using that tone. Upon listening, I was really struck by his chest voice and how strong he sounds. I feel that this part of his voice has really gotten stronger lately and that he has a lot more confidence in his voice.
So in this cover he demonstrates his different registers and his mastery of mixing to transition between them. The way he shifts from head to chest or head to falsetto is very seamless and smooth to the ear.
And once again he uses adlibs, echoes, and harmony to enhance and fill out the song. He really made it his own and I’m so proud of him. 💕🐰
