Started off #31DaysofHorrorishMusicals yesterday with Sweeney Todd, the greatest of them all.
Continuing #31DaysofHorrorishMusicals with this collection of newly recorded songs from classic horror movies. Bought it for singers (Rebecca Luker! Alison Fraser! Christiane Noll! Judy Kaye!), and never expected it to be so much fun
You read that right, it's the Leopold and Loeb musical! Finally! Unlike most tellings, they're actually gay/bi this time. So it's the story of a murder and an abusive, manipulative relationship. And the songs happen to be wonderful. #31DaysofHorrorishMusicals
"I was not myself last night..." #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
An enjoyable listen, with some really fabulous voices. Casting JB as literature's preeminent sexual predator is a little too on the nose, but what did we know back then? #plausibledeniability
The Witches of Eastwick, Original London Cast. With Lucie Arnaz, Maria Friedman, Joanna Riding, and Ian McShane #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals. A perfectly cromulent musical. Nothing horror about it, really, but witches, devil, egrets... close enough
I've adored Be More Chill since the first time I played it. A HS kid ingests a nanocomputer to makes him popular, then learns it's trying to take over the world. The songs are fantastic. "Michael in the Bathroom" will *destroy* you. 🙂💄🐾 #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
2012 Stuttgart cast of Rebecca. I don't speak German, but I've seen the movie enough times to know what's going on. My mom showed me the film when I was a kid. It was my first Hitchcock and my first Hollywood classic. Today is her birthday. Hence. #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
Day 9: Little Shop of Horrors OOBC. A social misfit comes across a scientific anomaly, becomes popular, learns it's part of a scheme to take over the world. That's also the plot of Be More Chill. Go fig. #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals (Has EGOT Alan Menken ever topped this score?)
10. Evening Primrose, from the anthology series Stage '67. Anthony Perkins gives up on the world to live in a dept. store. He's not the first to do so, and his predecessors have some very strict rules. Still kinda shocked it's made its way to DVD. #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
11. For Sunday, a vegetarian witch who's only trying to stop the Nazis. Songs by the Sherman Bros. Spells that don't work. #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
12. One of many musicals based on murders of Lizzie Borden's father and step-mother. The score is quite good, and Alison Fraser is marvelous as Lizzie.
12.5 The best dramatization of the Lizzie Borden story comes from Broadway musical New Faces of 1952. Songwriter Michael Brown sets Lizzie's trial in a hoedown. It's brilliant lunacy.
13. Side Show, the Broadway musical about conjoined twins Daisy & Violet Hilton. Inspired a passionate cult following of fans who never saw it. Launched the careers of Alice Ripley, Emily Skinner, and Norm Lewis. Some really wonderful songs. #31DaysOfHorror-ish Musicals
14. Saw it twice in Chicago. Bebe's big number was called "Second Banana." It was awful and I knew it would be cut (I was right). They were selling tshirts that said "no one's second banana," but I didn't get one because they only had women's sizes. I still regret that decision
