Multiple DMs asking me to comment since I'm the only deaf person many of you "know." My thoughts: 1) "Tone deaf" is not an ableist term. Using deaf or tone deaf as a metaphor (my friends are all deaf to why math is more fun than basketball!) is not ableist. Here are some real 1/4 https://twitter.com/darrenwalker/status/1310659341687586818
examples of varying degrees of ableism IMO: refusing or being nasty about it when I or others who typically lip-read need you to repeat yourself from behind your mask, or write something down. 2) Assuming that a mispronunciation is a reflection of low intelligence. 3) Acting 2/4
or speaking as if we deafies are a monolith, fragile flowers who will wilt in horror and be unable to cope with normal language usage. Senses and the lack thereof are helpful metaphors. "I see your point." "I hear your passion." "That was a tone-deaf comment." I learned to 3/4
lip read the names of all the inverse trigonometric functions and I watched a closed-captioned version of the debate. Idea that hearing people using "tone deaf" to mean a behavior was, well, tone deaf, is a legit obstacle in my life? So silly that it's kind of funny. 😂
