A thread for allies

I’m seeing a lot of “as an ally...” on my timeline.

Being an ally is not about you. It’s about the minority you claim to support. It’s an entirely selfless act that takes patience and understanding. But most of all LISTENING and SUPPORTING.

Listen to the words of trans, gay, bi, gender fluid people. Help raise them up.

Remember not all queer people think the same. We are as complex and beautiful as the rest of you. So before you speak for us, get to know us and our stories.

As an ally, you are not expected to know all the answers and get things right all the time.

But we do ask you to educate yourself where you can and be compassionate. Before you say the phrase “as an ally”, ask yourself, what are you really saying? Who does it benefit?

Do you care about LGBTQ+ people? Are you fighting for justice or self righteousness?

I’m of the belief that most allies are wonderful, well intentioned people who are detrimental to supporting LGBTQ+ people.

But please, remember being an ally more than a twitter bio title.
