UNLOVED, PERFECTIONISM AND HER OWN FEAR DESTROYED HER
UNLOVED;

early childhood is such a very delicate age for all and unfortunately, it is the age where azula didn't feel loved. her childhood consisted of her making zuko and ursa the object of her resent and hatred. zuko who despite being a weak bender is loved by their mother +
creating a rift of jealousy between the siblings. in the flashbacks from the search, while zuko and ursa bonded, azula attempted to gain ursa's attention and these attempts only resulted to family quarrels and disagreement. i'd like to think that azula tried to gain ursa's +
attention by showing how good she is in firebending despite at young age but none of it worked so she turned to mischief or cruelty by burning bushes/flowers then hurting animals, a mimicry from her father. now to ozai, even though he didn't show her real love at least he was +
proud of her and acknowledged her and because of it azula probably thought that's the only way to gain love. now, don't get confused. ozai is the reason why azula turned out to be such a cruel, dangerous and damaged person.
of course, i am no way saying that zuko is not a victim because he abused and scarred his face and pit them against each other also groomed azula to be soldier he can used. they would've been happy and normal siblings if only ursa loved them equally and ozai not in the picture +
PERFECTIONISM;

remember, being talented is not enough. azula probably received intense and advance trainings that she was able to turn her fire blue and generate lightning at the age of fourteen. also from the scene where li and lo is training azula, it showed that she's not +
content on being almost and good enough. everything must be precise and perfect and it driven her more because she knows what will happen to those who aren't— tossed aside and disposed. because there's high expectations placed upon her ever since she was just a child +
azula feared what will happen to her and she knows that she'll be more bigger embarrassment than zuko. that's why in ba sing se instead of claiming she was the one who killed the avatar, azula lied and said it was zuko.
also i'm not only saying this to azula but also to all who are just like her (minus the violent aspect). being a gifted children is not good at it seems, living up to the expectations from the others and their own— it can be very painful burden to shoulder.
FEAR;

when mai told azula, "i loved zuko more than i fear you" it triggered something in azula and that is her hatred for ursa, that she is being reminded that even if she is born lucky, zuko is born loved and even by her own friend. i don't think azula fully trusted mai and +
and her calculations are probably about if mai were to betray, is she willing to endanger herself and her family? she didn't count her love for zuko. mai's actions pushed to the point that instead of using fire it was lightning bend stance and lightning means death +
this where ty lee comes who surprised them both. ty lee always follow azula's order and because of her personality, they thought ty lee isn't capable of standing up againts azula. this scene is such a powerful for mai and the start of her character development and also +
saddest because both of them are azula had left and the breaking point. azula had a serious attachment issues because she didn't have a stable and healthy relationship in her entire life. her controlling, manipulating and instilling fear? it was her desperately clinging on +
to them and a very toxic way to make them never dare to leave her and because that's the only thing she know to do. also we all know ty lee's betrayal and her actions that also screams "i chose mai over you!" even though i like to interpret as ty lee choosing mai +
because they have more genuine friendship and also killing a person even if you resent them so much can fuck you up so bad ty lee prevented azula from actions she knew she wouldn't able to go back to but azula was irrational and blinded by anger +
to add more, ozai for the last time, manipulated azula before he went off to his spectacular failure. azula started to be paranoid when ozai told her to remain in fire nation and to do that he gave azula what she wanted, the title of fire lord which is pretty useless if he +
became the phoenix king. and azula was overjoyed and became more and more paranoid— till she snapped.
also i'd like to add that azula mayhaps know that zuko told their father about the avatar which pushed her to edge because she was willing to kill her own brother just so she could go back to ozai's good side. and of course, she might blamed him too for friends' betrayal +
lastly, i am no way invalidating zuko's and ursa's trauma because doing that means i am erasing her actions toward azula. we know that part of her being distant to azula because she saw ozai in her in turn paid attention and loved zuko more because she saw her old life
a life in which she could've had with ikem when she was young.

anyways happy azula day
