Sometimes data protection rules are used strategically to hinder fundamental rights (like information). Well here is a case in which they help protecting the dignity of women. The Italian DPA opened an investigation into a terrifying practice of some Italian hospitals.
After a miscarriage (before week28) women are asked if they want to take care of the fetuses or if the hospital should dispose of them. In the second case some hospitals bury them under a cross WITH THE NAME OF THE MOTHER ON IT. Without. informing. the. mothers.
Yep, you got it right. Entire 'gardens' have been found full of crosses with the names of the women on them, under which lie their fetuses, and the women had no idea they even existed. A devastating experience rendered even worse by the complete lack of decency of this practice.
I believe the DPA is right in investigating: these are sensitive data of thousands of women whose consent has not been asked. I hope the women hurt by that practice will heal soon, and that the DPA's intervention will prevent this obscenity in the future.
