On special ocassion of #GandhiJayanti

A thread on Godse and Bapu's assassination.

Nathuram Godse was born in in an orthodox Brahmin family which came from small village Uksan.

Nathuram or "Ram who wears a nose ring" helped to rescue an 'untouchable' from a well in his childhood.

In 1929, he went to Ratnagiri - a backward place where minor government officials were sent to mark time for their pensions.

Godse came into influence of Savarkar and was motivated to fight against British, reconversion of Christian and Muslims. Also revered Savakar as his Guru

Around 1931, Hindus of Nagpur started a Hindu sangathan for uniting hindus and protecting interests of Hinduism.

Nathu was in his 20s with modest living but still joined the HS and became Secretary. He read lot of books on hinduism, politics & history.

The pan islamic movement led by Jinnah for separate Islamic nation ultimately lead to creation of many hindu political groups.

A political organisation was led by Savarkar whose aim was to create Akhand Hindu Rashtra. Ms become more bigger enemy than britishers.

British India's act did not allowed citizens to have weapon as due to fear of revolt.

Savarkar supported hindus to join British Indian Army in WWII, so they can learn about defence & protect themselves from Ms in near future.

In 1944, Nathu started a newspaper venture named "Agrani" for voicing interest of Hindu Mahasabha.

Agrani considered it as a duty to inform hindus about atrocitues on them by Muslims.

Later Govt ordered it pay ₹ 6000 for 'communal' reporting.

Nathu somehow managed to pay the fine. But Later, Government ordered to close the publication of newspaper.

Nathu closed it down but next day started a new paper 'Hindu Rashtra'. Again he was ordered to pay ₹4000.

As you all know, Jinnah had launched Direct Action Day. A district called Noakhali became synonym for Genocide.

Bihar being hindu Majority was preparing to launch a reaction to Jinnah. Gandhi went to Bihar and asked Hindus to denounce violence.

'Secularism'

Hindu Rich families were forced to give up guns & swords by Police. Later Ms mobs come, destroy their houses, loot them and raped their woman.

The trouble in Bengal could hv been avoided if hindus were less high on dose of Gandhi's Ahimsa.

Gandhi toured all over Bihar and requested Biharis to denounce violence.

Also collected funds for muslims who had suffered in Bihar Riots.

***After Partition***

Narayan Apte was planning to destory whole of Pak Constituent Assembly.

[Later, He planned to assassinate Gandhi]

Gandhi demanded ₹55 Cr to be paid to Pakistan or else people will see him dead.

Refugees from Pakistan raised slogans like "Marta hai toh marne do ! Khoon ka badla khoon se lenge" outside Birla house.

Fed up of Gandhi's muslim appeasement, Godse decided to kill him. Also gandhi never condemned violence on hindus.

"There was no legal machinery by which Gandhiji could be brought to book.... I felt that he should not be allowed to meet natural death" : Godse.

Finally on 31st January

Nathuram Godse killed Gandhi.

As soon as it became known that murderer of Gandhi is Brahmin, Anti Brahmin riots provoked in cities.

Houses of Brahmins were burnt along with places of business.

Nathuram Godse, Narayan Apte, Vishnu Karkare, Madanlal Pahwa, Gopal Godse, Savarkar, Dattatray and Shankar Kistayya were charged with murder and other Charges connected to explosive substance.

Judgement was pronounced on February 10, 1949. Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte were sentenced to be hanged.

Savarkar was acquitted and rest all others were given sentence of imprisonment for life.

According to Godse's family

BR ambedkar contacted Nathuram's lawyer to convey the message if Nathuram desires mercy, he would be able to arrange it.

To which Godse replied, "I do not desire that any mercy should be shown to me."

"...... Had the audience of that day been constituted into a jury and entrusted with task of deciding Godse's appeal, they would have brought in a verdict of 'not guilty'. "

Justice GD Khosla.

He requested his family to drop his ashes into holy Sindhu river.

Also donated ₹ 101 during construction of Somnath Temple.

On 15 November 1949,

Godse and apte came out of their cell in Ambala Central Jail with map of Akhand Bharat, Bhagwa Dhwaj and a copy of Bhagwad Gita in hand

As they walked towards the hanging Shed, they both shouted :

"Akhand Bharat Amar Rahe !"

Finally they were cremated with hindu rites in open ground outside the prison wall.

Also all of this was done in secrecy so that no one should discover actual spot.

Interstingly this country proudly invests in Tomb of Invaders.
