Overhauling our waste system can help us fight climate change and save us money we could put towards programs like a Green New Deal (which needs more waste policies in it, just saying, @EdMarkey @AOC)
In New England we burn and bury about 12 M tons of waste each year for about $100 a ton in tipping fees, so $1.2 B. @clf @amylauracahn @bradleycampbell @RaymanRead @kevin_budris @amylauracahn
About 20-33% we throw away is food and yard waste that could be composted, so New England organic disposal is costing $240-360 million dollars a year. And creating methane. Never mind neg upstream impacts of the food we waste (which is huge). @MassDEP @CTDEEPNews @NHDES
Composting costs less than half what disposal does. And food waste can be reduced, we can feed more people, and feed more animals. 🐖 🐖 🐖 So New England could def save $140-180 M a year. @CEROcoop @CompostBoston @CompostBrooklyn @BioCycleMag @Green_Boston
We should not be paying for recycling, producers should be paying for end life of their packaging and products. Only fair, and forces them to make more sustainable design choices. Recycling tipping fees now up to $145 a ton - hundreds of millions would be saved. @clf @mikeday4rep
Biggest savings — if you don’t buy it, you don’t have to pay to get rid of it. #PAYT and #SMART programs mean pay only for trash you produce and can cut waste in half. Could save NE cities, towns, businesses $600 M a year. @WasteZero @mciccolo @wutrain @RepLoriEhrlich @MindyForMA
