#lff thread !
#nw: mogul mowgli
gosh, what an honest and poignant narrative, directed by bassam tariq. while film often aids in escapism, sometimes we just have to grit our teeth and get through the hard stuff, and who better to coach us than the fantastic riz ahmed
(2) #nw: herself
there will always be a special place in my heart for films that highlight the necessity of community in times of need, and herself is a staunch reminder that we must do whatever we can to help others. another difficult watch but an important one nonetheless!
(3) #nw: a day-off of kasumi arimura (episode 1)
a sweet pilot with a promising plot, and more than a few calming moments. i think i’ll watch the other episodes soon !
(4) #nw: eyimofe (this is my desire)
this film had me at slice of life and two narratives intersecting. i just love how the vibrancy and liveliness of lagos pushed their way into the film, the use of 16mm only enriched that. i’m so looking forward to seeing more nigerian new wave films, it’s too exciting for words.
(5) #nw: never gonna snow again
the film wasn’t quite what i expected, but that isn’t a bad thing. the absurdism and ambiguity themes held strong throughout, and not being able to predict what was going to happen was actually enjoyable. impressive camerawork too. now to watch alec utgoff’s entire filmography..
(6) #nw: supernova
there’s something to be said about how despite everything we stand to lose with love, we love, love, and love some more. with such tender and sincere performances from stanley tucci and colin firth, i won’t forget this beautiful film quickly
(7) #nw: the reason i jump
what an immersive and wonderfully edited (inc. sound design) documentary. we all have so much to do when it comes to changing the language and attitudes towards autism, and this is an absolute must-watch
(8) #nw: druk
how much control do we really have? whether that be about alcohol or how others perceive us, i feel like that’s the running question throughout this thought-provoking, and at times funny, drama. the ensemble cast were brilliant, and i can see why people are mad about mads !
(9) #nw: limbo
limbo.. also known as my favourite film of lff so far. it’s visually *stunning* and rich in unconventional yet entrancing framing, while addressing a particular elephant in the room in the uk. it’s heavy on the heart at times but another must-watch!!
(10) #nw: lovers rock
first and foremost, those close-up shots of dresses.. just magical. lovers rock was incredibly cathartic to watch, and i can finally properly visualise the 70s/80s house parties my mum speaks of :’). a real gem of a film.
