I will say it again and again because it's true: Romanticizing law and order as fascism tightens its grip is a big mistake.
Conflating order with democratic norms is also a big mistake. They plan to create so much chaos that you will accept order on their terms.
States are supposed to appoint electors by December 8. The electors are supposed to vote on December 14. It's possible that vote counts might still be in dispute at that time. Republicans are already talking about the appointment of "loyal" electors in this scenario.
There's also a potential government shutdown slated for December 11. How would that impact the situation? I have no fucking idea, because we are talking about a political O.K. Corral.
The moratorium on evictions ends Jan 1 by the way. They have one nuclear option after another to create absolute chaos. Would the GOP hold the government hostage with a shutdown at the potential height of a pandemic, with markets crashing from uncertainty? If it would help, yeah.
The goal is a total lack of clarity on January 6, when the ball lands in Pence's court, in terms of interpreting the law. Ppl keep saying the Dems need a landslide to win & I completely agree. They need a largely in-person landslide. Trump will claim the landslide itself is proof of fraud, but with an overwhelmingly clear mandate, the Dems would have a shot at forming a winning faction behind that.
For a very long time, when people have talked about him maybe not conceding if Biden won, I have told you all that he simply would not allow anyone to be legitimized as having defeated him. That is what's happening right now. He is already telling us that if he loses, it's fake.
Even an in-person victory won't be enough btw. We will be have to be willing to shut things down STRATEGICALLY. We will need labor solidarity, community defense against right-wing violence, eviction defense -- a spectrum of political actions on all fronts. And we cannot yield.
They will make chaos and try to tempt us with order and relief.
Sometimes, the cost of order is too damn high.
