What I love about Ooku so much is people reading the sypnosis (alt world where women hold the position of power like Shogun while men become their concubines) will expect it to be a feel-good girl power read but it really is not. Feminism is about equality & this manga is not.
This manga shows the mirror image of feudal Japan's misogynist society but instead from a man's point of view where they are treated as mere breeding stocks, sex toys & tossed around once they're not useable anymore.
Thus, since we're used to seeing men in the position of power & living in patriarchy world, unjust treatments like this are even more obvious especially in the eyes of male readers since they usually project themselves onto male characters.
Women leaders in here are not being portrayed as saints. They have a lot of flaws & incompetency as a ruler. However, despite them holding the position of power, they still suffer emotionally from the pressure of providing heirs. Even as a ruler, they have no freedom at all.
There's no good guys or bad guys. We're seeing the story from both sides. It makes us ponder a lot, things that we thought are simple are not as simple as it seems to be. I like that.
