During a sad moment a couple of weeks ago, I was feeling empathy for Mark Siddall and what his life must be like now. I wrote a little thread trying to explain my feelings. 1/5 https://twitter.com/david_swofford/status/1305196896273793026?s=20
Parts of this thread are still getting mentions so I want to provide a clarification. I was not (and am not) trying to diminish the cruelty and depravity of his behavior. 2/5
Concern for the perpetrator should definitely be secondary to concern for his victims, especially given the apparently long period of his actions and cover-up by his employer. 3/5
As I implied (perhaps too obliquely), before any further attempt at rehabilitation, Siddall needs to (1) acknowledge responsibility for what he did, (2) recognize the seriousness of his problems, and (3) seek psychiatric help in turning around his life. 4/5
What I was trying to say was that everyone deserves a chance at redemption. Unfortunately, it appears from the NYTimes article that he will continue to deny his actions rather than taking the steps he needs to take. It's not too late, but time is running out. 5/5
