anyone who knows me will tell you that I love spooky shit, so im going to recommend 31 amazing horror movies for you to watch this month. some of these are very popular and well known, others are a bit more underrated, but they're all my favorites. in no particular order
1. VHS/VHS 2
a found-footage style horror film framed as a collection of VHS tapes. essentially a gory and terrifying collection of short films condensed into about 2 hours. a cult classic that is absolutely worth the watch. VHS 1 and VHS 2 are both great, but the 3rd one is meh
2. Jacobs Ladder
a psychological horror movie about a Vietnam veterans descent into madness after returning home from the war. this movie used so many genius camera tricks and practical effects to achieve its terrifying premise. a wonder of filmmaking that was before its time.
3. The Lost Boys
vampires are running amok in Santa Carla, California, and since this movie is from the 80s, its up to a group of teens to save the day. an amazing soundtrack heavily featuring The Doors, a lighthearted but still spooky plot, and of course some terrifying vampires
4. Cabin in the Woods
more of a deconstruction or parody of the horror genre than an actual horror movie, but absolutely worth a watch if you (somehow) haven't seen it. full of hilarious moments, expertly subverts expectations at every turn.
5. Devil's Advocate
Keanu Reeves plays a defense attorney who has never lost a case. even when he knows his clients are guilty, he still ignores his morals to get them off. one day, he gets an offer to come work in a law firm in NYC, and things quickly take a demonic turn
6. The Human Centipede
you know. you all know.

absolutely worth watching if youre into body horror
7. Akira
a feature length anime film about secret govt experiments, nuclear apocalypse, and motorcycle gangs. not necessarily horror, but it definitely makes use of some common horror themes. this film is a marvel of animation, each frame is drawn beautifully by hand.
8. The Ring

I have to include this movie for nostalgias sake. I watched it for the first time when I was 9 years old and I spent the next six months sleeping in my parents bedroom and being terrified of TV static
9. Signs

full of suspense and doesn't bank on jumpscares to be frightening. super fun to watch, joaquin phoenix is amazing in it.
10. The Shining

blah blah overlook hotel blah blah Kubrick blah blah moonlanding. we all know that this movie is good lol.
11. Poltergeist

an upper middle class family unknowingly buys a house on an Indian burial ground and is accosted by ghosts and poltergeists. excellent 80s horror, classic film, super memorable and inspired a ton of more recent horror like paranormal activity
12. A Nightmare on Elm Street

can you tell that I love 80s movies yet? this is my personal favorite movie featuring Freddy. it manages to be slightly campy while still being scary as hell. all the later movies got too cheesy and the horror factor suffered in my opinion
13. The Evil Dead

the PERFECT amount of campiness. The Evil Dead is about a group of friends who find the necronomicon in a log cabin and accidentally unleash a wave of evil undead creatures. our hero, Ash, grafts a chainsaw to his arm to fight back the horde.
14. The Fly

a scientist creates a teleportation device and decides to test it out on himself. unknown to him, a fly slips into the device at the same time and its DNA is merged with the scientist's. amazing practical effects, makeup, and full of psychological and body horror
15. The Cube 2: Hypercube

watch this fucking movie. please watch this fucking movie. I can not explain it, nor will I try, but by God its so terrible that it goes full circle and becomes amazing.
16. Shaun of the Dead

when zombies awaken in london, Shaun and his buds just wanna get one last pint. directed by my personal favorite director, Edgar Wright (who made Scott Pilgrim and Baby Driver), this movie is full of hilarity but knows when to be serious at times
17. Trick r Treat

another horror anthology movie, this one is set in a small suburban town on Halloween, where the residents encounter real ghosts, goblins, and monsters. all of the short stories are interwoven and connected.
18. It Follows

a shapeshifting/invisible creature slowly follows you until it catches up and kills you. nomatter how far you run, its always slowly walking towards you. it can look like anyone, and the only way to get rid of it is to give it to someone else. by fucking them.
19. The Ritual

four college friends reunite after the death of their friend. on a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness they find themselves stalked by an ancient mythological creature. suffering hallucinations, encountering a cult, and losing their trust for one another.
20. The Wicker Man (1973)

the scariest musical you'll ever watch. a constable is sent to an isolated island off the coast of the UK to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, but it quickly becomes clear that the whole town may be in on the mystery
21. Hereditary

I rented this movie on DVD and watched it alone in my apartment and was promptly freaked the fuck out. i dont even know how to explain it. ghosts and a fucked up family. very good movie, definitely watch it.
22. Shutter Island

leonardo dicaprio is a detective in the 50s, sent to a mental asylum to investigate a missing patient. however, things start to unravel and we have to question our own protagonists sanity and motivations
23. Split

three girls are kidnapped by a man with multiple personalities. as they try to survive, we get to know each individual personality of the antagonist and really see how twisted he is.
24. Eraserhead

david lynch made this movie for a mere $10,000, and boy, did he make the fuck out of this movie. horrifying premises and characters make this film a classic staple in the horror genre. also, theres a lizard baby.
25. Jeepers Creepers

this movie sucks. the protagonists are morons, the monster is dumb, the premise makes no sense, and the director is a pedophile.

I recommend it because one time me and @Niggalodeon_ got high as fuck and made fun of it the whole time and it was hilarious
26. Katasumi, 4444444444, Ju On: The Grudge

not everyone knows this, but the grudge is actually the third film in the series. katasumi and 4444444444 are short horror films that predate the grudge. if you enjoy the grudge, I highly recommend the other two movies as well
27. Tales from the Crypt

another anthology film, this movie follows a group of tourists lost in the catacombs. they encounter a crypt keeper who tells them each their terrifying fated manner of death. I think this also became a TV show later on.
28. Bandersnatch

a black mirror movie. this is an interactive horror movie where we choose all of the actions our protagonist as his mental state breaks down. available on Netflix, seriously take a couple of hours and try to get all of the endings, its very fun.
29. Creep

a woman awakens to find herself locked in the london subway and tries to navigate the tunnels to find her way out, quickly realizing that she may not be alone
30. An American Werewolf in London

the shit. that they did. to make this movie. before cgi was invented. is mindblowing.

a man becomes a werewolf and we watch him struggle with the thought of committing suicide before he transforms and kills someone. excellent film.
31. Green Room

rip anton yelchin. this is about a punk band who finds themselves trapped in the green room of a neo nazi bar after a gig goes south. hunted by the skinheads, the band has to try to find a way out alive before they're murdered. very brutal and realistic violence.
