Today is the 1 yr anniversary of re-committing myself to studying & improving my voice!

Since 10/1/19 I’ve been taking regular lessons & practicing 20-30 mins/day.

For you singers - here are the biggest changes I’ve seen w/ regular practice + the things that are still hard:
Biggest changes pt.1

Range: I’ve added abou a 3rd to the top of my chest/mix and a step to the top of my falsetto.

I used to have a pretty hard chest stop at A4. With practice I’ve been able to pretty reliably extend that with full mix up to B/C!
Biggest changes pt.2

Endurance: This hasn’t been tested as much as I’d like due to Covid, but I used to get tired after 15-20 mins of range-testing exercises. Now I can go 20-30 mins with little to no fatigue.

Even pre-Covid, I was noticing less fatigue singing in loud places.
Biggest changes pt.3

Range of tone. I still have a long way to go, but I’m much more comfortable switching between operatic and contemporary singing in the extremes of my voice. Less so in my break, but still, better!
Still needs work pt. 1

My break is still very much a thing. I’ve worked a lot on bringing more lightness into my break (D-F), but man, it’s still super tough. Definitely one of the slowest areas of progress. I would rather sing a B4 than an F4, lol.
Still needs work pt. 2

Pitch. Confession - I have a surprisingly bad sense of pitch for someone who literally arranges for a living. I *feel* harmonies more than I *hear* them internally, so I’m much more comfortable working with harmony on paper than working aurally.
Still needs work pt.3

Pitch (2) - bc I don’t have the strongest ear, I have to wrk twice as hard to stay on top of my tuning. When I’m over-focused on it, my vibrato can’t get a little wild, or my technique can suffer, which circles back around & affects my pitch. Ongoing work!
Still needs work pt.4

Nasality. I default to a more nasal tone than I’d like, and it’s been a *very* slow process to change that. Still working on that, too!
I wanted to share all that w anyone out there who may be working on their own voice and needs encouragement and/or to commiserate about challenges!

The voice is a muscle, and if you approach it like an athlete, you can make some amazing changes (while other things remain tough)!
