The Commission on Presidential Debates needs to think a little harder about these changes. Cutting off mics is not the answer. We already know DT’s mic will be cut more often because he can’t control himself and because chaos is his game. 1/5

The right is going to make a huge deal of his mic being cut more often. They’ll scream his 1A rights are being violated. They’ll insist the mod favors Biden. They’ll repeat over and over that the debates and the election is rigged in Biden’s favor. We can’t play into that.

The better option is to insist when it isn’t their turn to speak, the candidate must take two steps back or to the side of their mic. Imagine the optics of DT stepping back for Biden’s time and then because he can’t control himself he will have to do one of two things:

A.) Step back up to his mic to speak. If he does this it’s going to look aggressive. Force him to step into a space he doesn’t belong in.
The second option he has is B.) to stay physically back and shout to be heard. He’s going to come off unhinged, crazed, and aggressive.

We can and should do a better job controlling the optics here. We’re losing badly on that front.
