Puerto Rico is voting on a referendum on statehood this Nov. With widespread support among elected Dems, and after decades of debate, #PRstatehood really feels closer than ever to becoming a reality. So here's a map of what potential congressional districts might look like. 1/x
I really tried to keep as many municipalities together as I could, but ultimately 4 municipalities were split: Carolina, Trujillo Alto, Bayamon (where my family lives), and Jayuya. 2/x
I also tried to maintain four specific geographc regions: the San Juan metro area (based in San Juan/Bayamon/Guaynabo), the southeast (based in Caguas/Guayama/Humacao), the north (based in Arecibo), and the southwest (based in Mayaguez/Ponce). 3/x
Whereas in 2010-2011, PR may have had 5 CDs, there has been a significant loss of population. This has been caused in part by financial trouble and Hurricane Maria. So I am estimating that they would likely only have 4 CDs today, which is what I am showing here. 4/x
This would mean that the state would have 6 electoral college votes. This is more than 16 other states (and DC), and on par with an additional 6 states (including Iowa, Nevada, and Kansas) 5/x
