Had my exit interview with @NHSEngland today reflections on my personal experience of like Kevin Holton the best manager I’ve ever had, closely followed by the fab @neilgchurchill and @TomEdgell but also spoke honestly about my experience and the marginalisation I experienced
I was honest, balanced and focussed on supporting the organisation to learn, for individuals to develop and to perhaps, just perhaps stop it all from repeating. Racism is a structure that you don’t observe, lead or oversee but instead you occupy. #BHM
To diminish that Structure you need to maintain consciousness as to your decisions and impact, have you diminished the structure of racism or have you reaffirmed it. Has someone left your organisation with your boot print on their shoulders? Do you care? #BlackHistoryMonth
Or have you helped people shine? Have you unleashed potential from the weathering? Good questions to consider. My experience, 29 years I’ve never been promoted by an all white male panel. #BHM
I have succeeded due to some kindness, hard work, coaching and recognition but despite the marginalisation, minimising and discriminatory behaviour in our NHS. However there are more good than bad, but there are also more ambivalent than good. This balance needs to change #bhm
My contribution to #BHM :
You create our history every day in your deeds, your actions and your thoughts about us, the look, the tone, the lack of connection, we get it, we don’t feel safe as it took us too long to get here, do you see us as your equal? Do you even see us?
Do you want to see us? Do you understand our journey? Do you understand what’s behind the laughter & the jokes, when it goes quiet and dark and we are left with the same experiences of our fathers. Do you see us? If you do, then describe us? Our value? Our contribution? #BHM2020
I am here, as my father was, as my children will be. I will work for them, I will hurt for them, I will speak for them, until they will be seen by you!
