Who lied to you all and said organizing is for privileged people? Most people begin organizing out of necessity. Mutual aid is organically practiced in the slums and ghettos of our world. The real privilege is never HAVING to take the initiative to resource your community.
This misconception is also rooted in people thinking that the celebrity activists speaking on national TV and being written about in magazines are what organizers look like. It’s not. Those people tend to be focused on press more than anything. Organizing isn’t glamorous.
It’s so funny because when I see activists plastered on magazine covers I can’t help but wonder if the people on their block have enough food to eat — if they ever take time to do jail support. How are you an accomplished organizer but your community is helplessly disorganized?
I do interviews and panels, but mostly for my work in media. Anyone who does knows they take a ridiculous amount of time. Organizing takes EVEN MORE TIME. The people doing the hard nonstop work aren’t stopping for photo shoots every week. I promise.
Shoutout to the people who understand people’s subjugation and bloodshed is not an industry to monopolize. Shoutout to Tanya, Dusty, Egypt and Jess for inspiring me with their work w/ Black + Pink. Shoutout to the real everyday people wanting to see real change, everyday.
I’ll lastly say, when I began organizing I was homeless. I am currently a full time student that works 40 hours a week. The people I organize with now are mostly formerly incarcerated and/working class. Don’t just abolish the police, abolish money hungry “activists” too!
If you‘re interested in organizing please reject any notion of a large nebulous community that needs to be spoken for. People need food, shelter and tangible resources more than they need inspirational speeches. Look to YOUR community and the needs not being met where YOU live.
PLEASE circulate and donate to this fund that I and so many great organizers have worked to put together for LGBTQ folks incarcerated in New York State. Stay safe, stay loud and stay loving y’all! 🤍 https://twitter.com/treasurefbrooks/status/1311776796770275335
