The biggest reason why the Texas GOP continues to win in this state is because they have been actively making it as difficult as possible for folks here to vote for decades. We didn’t get this way by accident or by apathy alone. #txlege
My state’s government makes it difficult for people to register to vote, register others to vote, and then actually vote. I’m tired of hearing non-Texans’ ignorant, shitty hot takes about Texans all being stupid when we are being held hostage by our own state government. #txlege
Since his term began, Governor Abbott has made no secret of his desire to control every inch of this state by way of executive overreach, even as he and his party “stand for limited government”. It’s a sham. It always has been, even before 2014.
I’m tired of people insulting my state. I’m tired of people speaking when they don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. And I’m tired of people screaming “VOTE” when so many people face so many confusing and often draconian hurdles that it’s easier to just give up. #txlege
It’s for this reason that the “you deserve what happens to you if you don’t vote” takes are hot ass garbage. No, I don’t deserve anything that this government does or doesn’t do to/for me. I don’t deserve to drown in a hurricane. None of us do and fuck you for saying that.
Sometimes, people give it 100% and they lose. Work for years and years, receiving nothing but ridicule and scorn from others, and lose. All while having to overcome obstacle after obstacle. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the damage inflicted in the meantime is not “deserved”.
Now that Texas is a “swing state” the same people who pointed and laughed at my state as we suffered through Hurricane Harvey “because you voted Trump” are acting like they’ve cared the whole time. Acting like they’ve always been here, doing the work and caring about Texans. Nah.
I don’t know what it’s going to take (actually, I do: years of work) for people to lead with compassion and understanding in their civic engagement. You can’t just tell people to vote a certain way and then get mad when it magically doesn’t happen AND THEN INSULT THOSE PEOPLE.
If we’re going to make other state’s affairs our business (which we should, to an extent, imo), it would be in the best interest of not just ourselves (don’t center yourself at all, actually) but the folks of that state to educate ourselves on the systems they navigate within.
This latest action from my governor is another power grab by the Texas GOP that follows a pattern spanning decades of efforts executed by his party to retain the hold that they have had on this state since before I was born. They know they’re losing. They’re desperate. #txlege https://twitter.com/chucklindell/status/1311718569189806089
But states do not exist in this country in isolation, on their own. I know that out-of-staters have opinions about my state and the way we do business. But please, before commenting or thinking about what big idea you have to “help” us poor Texans, stop. And listen. And learn.
Texas will flip. Maybe not this year, but please do not give up. Scripture asks “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” And little victories add up.

There will be setbacks, just like this one. But we will win in the end.
