My Around The A podcast partner @FootyOnTheAir and I just finished a chat with new AHL president and CEO Scott Howson.

We will have the full interview early next week, but here is some general info from Howson about the 2020-21 AHL season.

On moving off the tentative December 4th start date: "It's still technically very, very tentatively December 4. We're not ready to [change] that yet."

"We aren't directly tied to the NHL schedule. But certainly we want to be in sync with it."

#AHL
● The schedule could be pushed back "to at least" February and "maybe" March.

● At present, there are three AHL markets that would be able to have "any type of fan base come into their building."

● A regular-season schedule could be 40-65 games, depending on the start.

#AHL
● An altered playoff format is possible, and the AHL could play into the summer. However, the plan for the 2021-22 season would be for a traditional October open.

#AHL
● One issue to examine is how to move players across the border. Three Canadian NHL clubs have US-based affiliates.

● Howson also confirmed my earlier report that the league and teams would need about eight weeks of lead time from the decision to play until puck-drop.

Finding a workable solution for independently owned AHL clubs is another significant to-do item.

As an executive with Columbus and Edmonton, he has been in both types of affiliations (NHL team-owned and independently owned).

So, that is a bit of the info from today. Hopefully this provides at least a starting point for some answers.
