#CaravanaMigrante #exodocentroamericano I’ve been fielding questions about this new caravan and the US elections all morning. So here are my thoughts in a thread: 1) not everything should be seen through a US-centered lens. 2) this caravan is the latest in a long series of (1/5)
organized exodus. 3) honduras recently lifted a strict lockdown so people can circulate within their country more or less freely for the first time in a while. 4) the pandemic has made already existing problems worse - like extreme poverty and extreme insecurity, political (2/5)
repression of activists, attacks on the press, and militarization. 5) no one has to manipulate or trick Hondurans into migrating. A whole lot of people are just waiting for the chance to leave. 6) the discourse that caravans have some nefarious behind-the-scenes actors (3/5)
allows the Honduran government to escape culpability for a situation that makes people feel like fleeing, literally walking across three nations, during a pandemic, is their best option. 7) the responses of authorities in Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico should absolutely be (4/5)
read as being directed by the United States because DHS is basically running the state department in the region. (5/5) End thread.
