I am a gentle Halloween person, which means I love fall and spookiness and magic but I am not a slasher/gore/jump-scare person. I’ve developed a list of Fall/Halloween movies and tv episodes that I love to go back to every October- gonna share them on this thread as I go.
For some reason I feel like starting with the pilot of ONCE UPON A TIME. Yes, the show had severe issues later on, but I maintain the modern half of the story gives us magical pilot that introduces a really exciting universe- and just feels very fall. It’s on Disney+
Ok you all are very enthusiastic!! Here’s another Gentle Halloween pick to whet your whistle - pair that OUAT watch with the Sleepy Hollow pilot - a show I was SURE was going to be silly and turned out to have a stellar freshman season. Tom Mison is DELIGHTFUL as Ichabod.
JANE OF LANTERN HILL
Made by the same team behind the Anne series of the 1980s, this 1910s-set miniseries asks the important question: WHAT IF ANNE OF GREEN GABLES HAD GHOSTS??
Hard to find now, but incredibly spooky, hunt down a dvd if you can!
Also in this mini-series:
-Colleen Dewhurst AS A PSYCHIC MYSTIC
-Sarah Polley AS A COCKNEY 9 YEAR OLD
-Sam Waterston AS SAM WATERSTON

I’m not going to encourage you to pirate a 30 year old miniseries that isn’t streaming anywhere but I also cannot stop you
Good news! Trust me, if you have a kid with a remote bit of witchiness in them, this is gonna be their favorite https://twitter.com/jklope4/status/1312054956833173504
Gentle Halloween recommend of the day: THE ILLUSIONIST aka the one that isn’t The Prestige. I *vastly* preferred this gothic magic story with a compelling, mysterious romance at heart. Lovely performances from the whole main cast and a haunting score. Streaming on Prime.
Next up! A SHOT IN THE DARK
Most people know Peter Sellar’s Clouseau from THE PINK PANTHER, but this ridiculous 60s whodunit sticks the bumbling inspector into an adaptation of a French play, causing several murders and a little public nudity. On Hulu Premium and Prime.
Your next Gentle Halloween viewing suggestion: Another TV double header!
HALLOWEEN from My So Called Life takes us on a magic-realism trip through a high school Urban Legend, as Angels tries to save another handsome drifter from his fate (Amazon)
And SASSENACH, the pilot to Outlander, was considerably spookier and more atmospheric than the rest of the season, with cockerel blood on the doors, a mesmerizing Samhain dance...people disappear all the time... (Netflix, Starz)
For Angela Lansbury’s birthday, what better than the gently spooky classic BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS? This is a beloved favorite of mine, a WW2-set musical-magical-comedy, with one of the coolest climactic battles Disney has ever done. On Disney+, Amazon
TODAY! Obviously, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a Halloween classic, BUT, have you caught the other slightly spooky Brooks/Wilder/Kahn/Feldman team-up SHERLOCK HOLMES’ SMARTER BROTHER? Probably not recently because it doesn’t stream anywhere goddamnit, BUT...
If you can get your hands on it, this less-lauded-but-still-great movie sees Wilder as Siggurson Holmes, Sherlock’s very bitter brother, drawn into a mystery of dance hall singers, opera crimes, and the funniest carriage chase I’ve ever seen. Kahn and Wilder are VERY smoldery.
GENTLE HALLOWEEN UPDATE! Man, 8 days left! Tonight, we’re delving into yet another slightly eerie but not scary classic - LABYRINTH! Get your tights on and your falsetto warmed up! If you’re feeling a Friday double feature, pair it with LEGEND!
