Does the state really care when it kills you? Lesley Thomas, QC kicks off with searing brilliance (and humanity).
At the end of a long list of what we'd expect when someone dies a sudden death; 'We would expect the state to treat the dead with respect'.
The state also kills people in other ways. Like when it stops benefits and leaves people, like Errol Graham, to starve to death. Or savage cuts in MH services...
These are political decisions which illustrate who counts and who doesn't. Suspect this may be the most kickass @GreshamCollege lecture (by their first black professor).
Thomas lays out the stall of his lecture series; a critical examination of the inquest process, inequalities and what happens when the state kills your loved one.
'The state expects you to put your hand in your pocket and pay your lawyer when it has killed your loved one... Just think about that for a moment.'
The lecture ends with reference to baby Hayden and a comment from his dad @tumtumtum. Dishonouring death. ♥️
Prevention of Future Death reports now being shredded. Every year we are seeing deaths happening in the same way... Every year. @alisonleary1 @GeorgeJulian
Disgust, anger, passion and rage palpable during the QA section. I'm left with 'thank fuck for @_lesliethomas' (sorry for spelling name wrong).
Next lecture 6pm 3/12. 'Who investigates sudden deaths?'
