I am still screaming...still screaming. The first two speakers on a panel about dismantling racism in wildlife are...wait for it...white men. I love the scientists who are talking right now and I think that these points of view are important but I am sorely disappointed in TWS
I don't think a talk on dismantling racism in wildlife should begin with two white, cis men. It just gives the wrong vibe. I think their stories and experiences are important but if this is where we are at as a society I am just gutted tbh.
I know there are a lot of people in TWS who need to hear about racism from other white men. They're too entrenched in racism to hear it from anyone else BUT I don't think that should have been this talk.
I'm glad the current speaker has a Black wife who can guide this convo but...couldn't we have had his Black wife on the panel?!
Could we have called this panel 'recognizing our white privilege in the wildlife profession' I think that would have been more appropriate...
Admittedly the invitation to help organize this was open to all TWS people and I purposefully didn't get involved because I was busy with Black Mammalogists and camping AND because I knew it would be something like this...
