October brings with it Black History Month, a month to celebrate successes and achievements of black people around the world! Contributions of black people are often overlooked and although some progress has been made in establishing equality, there is still a long way to go.
The year of 2020 brought not only COVID-19 but also the #blm movement which has shown us all how real and existent police brutality and racial prejudice still is. This is not a distant thing but is happening right here in our community, in our hospitals and clinics.
For those of us who are privileged and benefit from the workings of the current society, it is impossible for us to really know life as a black person even though we benefit from black culture every day.
Systemic racism continues to operate and it is our responsibility to break this down. There is a lot to say about this yet nothing new that hasn’t already been said more eloquently by countless others.
For this reason, this month we will be sharing resources from black creators, posts about inspirational black women in our field as well as some resources to explore these injustices further. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves.
