Perhaps more than the ranting, and shouting, and the refusal to disavow racism - this was the gravest misstep Trump made in the debate. The opioid problem in America crosses the racial, socioeconomic, and political spectrum. It is close to home for a LOT of very different people. https://twitter.com/AdamSerwer/status/1311647242281988096
I won't forget the day I was driving with my parents through downtown Ware, MA, discussing the impact that heroin had on small-town Massachusetts.
My mother - a kind, decent, sweet woman - a battlescarred 35 year veteran ER nurse - said "I could get out of the car right now and be back in five minutes with enough heroin for all three of us to OD with the money I have in my wallet."
There's a graph somewhere of "how good it makes you feel" vs "how likely it is to kill you". Heroin is at the end of the chart on both axes.

It can kill you and it will, regardless of who you are - D or R, black or white, rich or poor, suburban or urban or rural.
Trump botched this so badly because he's a narcissist who can't even conceive of someone responding to this differently.

He's an appalling, disgusting man.
