One weird thing about contemporary "worship" music is that it is such a narrow, specific sound.

Good hymnals are actually more eclectic. They contain American folk tunes, British art music, 16th c German melodies, early 20th c gospel songs, Afr-Am spirituals, and more!
I'm not against contemporary stuff, nor do I think every church needs a hymnal, but something is lost—*musically*, i'm not here thinking as much about lyrics/doctrine as the common grace gift of musical diversity—if a church limits itself to songs from one era/source.
Millennials & teenagers often tell me that they CAN'T STAND the sound/style of contemporary worship. I know many love it, and it's hard to over-generalize, but lots of young people find it over-produced, poppy, and predictable. I think that sometimes surprises church leaders.
