A few things first since I don't have the Viz dub so this is gonna be between the manga, the Dic dub and the original. But I might bring up the trailers for the Viz dub when I can draw a comparison. Also I always found it cool that they used Naoko's art as the base for cover!
First of the movie starts with this cold opening and Dic decided to start the snow and ice puns early.
Also Dic Kaguya is hamming it so hard already and I kinda of love it! On a fun note her Viz counterpart is voiced by Melissa Fahn sad I can't hear it :(
She's not even making puns in Japanese making this all the funnier!
(Also the Dic clips will be in the old Tv full screen while the Japanese clips or screenshots will be full screen sorry just working with what I have! Sorry should have mentioned it earlier💧)
So the manga starts here but let's look at the movie scene first. So Kakeru sees Kaguya cast down five shards from her comet and rushes to the crash site to see what landed he is shocked and kinda scared looking. We later learn he collects the shard as a sample.
In the manga we open with Kaguya talking to Kakeru it's unclear if he can hear her. But she can feel how lonely he is and gently gives him a shard of herself. He looks up kind of wistful. It looks like he's probably standing on hill near where the astronauts are based.
I'm confused how these designs are the same thing.
I FORGOT THAT THE DID THIS!!!!
I'm not sure why we have subs going at the same time I wonder if someone tried to make a cleaner rip using a rar and applied the English track?
And here's the original in all it's glory!
I do love how both end with the same Ba-dum timed with her head tilting!
Also Usagi reading Sailor Moon and Minako reading Sailor V in this opening is just adorable!
Also this sequences sums up the 90s anime versions of the inner senshi in basically on shot.
Also I've always been confused at where Chibiusa is looking in Mako's shot.
Usagi's just so cute (*^▽^*)<3
I love how Pluto is just like "Oh you!"
While Haruka and Michiru look both confused and concerned parents.
Oh actually this is probably one of the biggest differences between versions and that is Pluto. Since this movie is set late fall or early winter it has to take place after S. Meaning she should be dead or reincarnating in the 90s animeverse at the moment. until Stars. So???
Actually her inclusion in the Super S movie both makes both more and less sense. Since she had time to reincarnate but probably didn't have her memories yet...

Unless that movie takes place during the Nehelenia arc in stars but before Usagi becomes Eternal Sailor Moon?
In the manga she died in R got Reincarnated by so she could be with everyone in S. By the end of S she and the other outers leave to raise Hotaru. Meaning they could easily get a babysitter and come and visit after S for say a joint birthday party.
The one hitch with this is that Michiru is using her mirror in the beginning of this chapter. Which had given to Chibiusa to hold onto at the end of S so??? Does she have multiple mirrors??? Cause it looks like their home from Super S???
I will get back to this later when it comes up in the movie but the outers are aware of it. But I don't think they know something is on the comet.
Also Pluto is the mom who says you look good no matter what!
But she's also the mom that brings booze to an underaged birthday party she's wild like that.
But she also made sure to bring something nonalcoholic for Chibiusa!
Luna and Artemis are at a weird point here in the manga. They have Diana with them so they know they have a kid but all their relationship hasn't gotten that far yet. So it's gotta be weird.

(Oh also for 90s anime only folks Diana has been with them since R in the manga.)
I'm sad we didn't get this party it's a always a treat seeing everybody together and just hanging out. Also nice is seeing they outers so happy and relaxed! ^^
On the same page we get out first manga panel of Kaguya. Bringing in more of that Yuki onna feel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki-onna
Right then back to the 90s movie and we get out first shot of Himeko not much to say other then they talk about her getting ready to go into space.
Nothing to say it's just Kotono Mitsuishi's Usagi noises
And now Terri Hawkes's Serena noises also.
"Blah blah who are you supposed to be my conscience fairy?"
Moving along(I'll circle back to Artemis)
In the movie Luna has caught a cold while in the manga some kids catch her on her way to Mina's house and stick Sailor Moon brand bandages on her crescent moon.
I feel like the director for the Dic dub told Jill Frappier to keep talking here to try and ease tension maybe? IDK

But I do think the idea of Usagi/Serena trying and failing to make Luna soup when she's sick adorable.
Random little thing from the car that almost hit Luna we actually can see that's it a Mercedes in the manga.
"WHHAAAAAAAAaaaaaa----"
"GOTCHA!"
If your looking away this just sounds like he snuck up and scared her.
In the movie Luna passes out after seeing his Kakeru's face and he tells her she has a fever when she wakes up and gives wipes her head with a cool cloth.-
I love how squeaky Keiko Han's voice gets here as she reads these lines it reminds me of Usagi!💕
I actually also love how gentle and soft Jill's voice is here too! (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)
In the manga she passed out before the car almost hit her and Kakeru took her home and bandaged her up. The first thing he says besides that she's awake is wondering aloud if cats can eat konpeito.
Usagi and Rei
(I promise I will get back to Artemis)
Serena and Raye
(Also the way Terri handles all these quick emotional changes is one of the reasons why Terri my favorite dub moon<3)
Kakeru still put konpeito on Luna's plate like he wasn't 100% What cats eat still lol
So Himeko is here and oh boy do we have some things to upack between versions here... Let's switch back to the manga for just a bit.
So after noticing the brandade Kakeru rips it off commenting on her crescent bald spot(Still funny that everyone calls it that!) And then one of his assistants barges in saying that "Hime is back!"
So Kakeru lives on base or at least brought Luna to work with him in the manga.
However unlike his movie counter part Kakeru is already suffering from his heart problems. Now this is just a thought but considering Kaguya's yuki onna inspired design and he's just heard the women he loves is home... I wonder if Kaguya felt his emotions and got jealous?
Now in the manga this is where Himeko enters but let me switch back to the movie. I have to break this conversation up in parts. One thing over all is that you can really feel her emotions here. Excited, expectant, disappointed and finally that false happy tone she throws on..
Himeko is voiced by the legendary Megumi Hayashibara and she does a great job here.
In english .Jen Gould so Cloverways Hotaru and while she conveys some of her emotions well there are times that I'm just left baffled.
Kakeru: "Welcome back!"
Himeko:*strange laugh*
*sees a cat smiles*
Himeko:"HUH???"
Himeko: "Have you seen the news about my new *awkward pauses for like 4 secs* lunar project?"
That sweet tone she was using with him starts to drop so fast so fast here. Like the moment he brings up that he was looking at the moon.🌙
Her dismissive attitude only increases as she not only doesn't believe him but she backs it up with science. Which while a valid point it's got to hurt him with how quick she is to jump to he's probably lying.
Kakeru starts to get heated but still tries to be patient and show her the piece of the comet he collected. So physical evidence and she's just like wow what a pretty rock! :D
It's like Himeko you asked for evidence he's showing you evidence why not ask if he had it analyzed???
Kakeru tries to ask for support and she brings up the fact that their piers laugh at him cause he into myths and tends to romanticize space???
I really don't think it's that uncommon I mean people have been doing the same for the sea for centuries.-
I understand she's trying to bring the scientific method into this but the way she just ignores his feelings is just plan cold... It feels like on her part she just wants him to grow up or be someone he isn't? Anyway Kakeru has a heart atta--? I guess a migraine in the movie?
The raised eyebrow kinda makes it look like she thinks he's faking.
Kakeru is a bit harsh when he pushes her away here but to be fair he is in a lot of pain and needs a little space to catch his breath.
She then tries to guilt trip him with her use of personal time to visit him. When he insists that he needs a little time alone-
and she takes it so personally...
Himeko you took a week off you have time to spend with him just go visit someone else for a bit. Then call once you've both cooled your heads.
Like when she eavesdrops here she seems to realize that he's still very happy that she's heading into space. It's just hard cause he didn't make the cut.
Meanwhile let's see how this was handled in the Dic dub!
Over all they lighten the general tone however I have a feeling we have some Cloverway writers on staff on this movie...
"CHECK IT OUT!"
Moving on Himeko doesn't bring their colleagues laughing him into this conversation or claim that he's romanticizing space. She does seem to imply he's losing touch with reality..
Also
"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! WHENEVER I OBSERVE THE MOON I FEEL SOME STRANGE AND POWERFUL FORCE!"
There's something both softer and more exasperated at the same time in the way she read these lines.
Also Dic Kakeru has a migraine
Kakeru: *weird Wormmon noise*
So I looked up vacation time for NASA astronauts she would have had well over 10 days of vacation days. I guess no one double checked?
For some reason he's super angry reading his lines here and then he's just like :D
Okay I think I can switch back to the manga so how are we introduced to Himeko? By them cutely teasing each other with a nice bit back and forth.
We quickly learn that she's not a full time astronaut yet and is a hopeful caudate for an up coming mission. She's well liked by her piers and has a gung-ho cheerful attitude which coworkers attribute to her being more like a samurai then a princess.
A pretty big difference between versions is that not only are other scientist aware of the comet but the news is as well.
We also see the other scientist mocking Kakeru rather then being told about it. So how does Himeko respond?
By being upset for him and wishing he would stick up for himself.
She also gives us a few flashbacks of them growing up talking about how he started with bottle rockets then his time overseas studying in America. I like how these panels seem like there from her point of view.
This is also a major difference he wasn't not just just chosen he was a top candidate and chose not to apply again.
Since the government is well aware of the comet we get a scene where the Kakeru talks with the board about how the comet has set a trajectory to crash into the earth. Naoko apparently predicted the plot to the movie Armageddon!!
(Also how did Luna scale the building??)
Last time we left off the comet is heading straight for earth. Luna takes action to tell the girls!
(Sorry for the lack of updates on this thread u u;)
Wait a minuet that's Mugen!!! So this takes place during S??? But we saw them in there shared house earlier???
Continuity aside things are tense so they call their parents and by parents I mean Papa Haruka and Mama's Michiru and Setsuna. Who very easily drain the tension in no time flat. This all happens within too pages!
Yeah tooooootally!
More tiny sneaking Luna ~\\(≧▽≦)/~
(She wanted to return the handkerchief to Kakeru!)
It's nice that while his coworkers give him a hard time about this it's clear they still like him. It's kinda weird how much of a loner they made Kakeru is in the movie.
Actually in general the cast feels smaller in the movie is that weird to say?
It's cute how she was just gonna leave it on the desk for Kakeru to find later. Also it's kinda cute how Kakeru calls Luna his guest!
