At @hrw we stand w gig workers, whose rights are at risk.
@AmosToh & I explain in @Wired how Proposition 22 would roll back min wage & other labor protections for gig workers @Instacart & @Shipt in California.
That's why we say #NoOnProp22.

2/ In 2019, California passed #AB5 to make worker misclassification harder, via a simplified legal standard (“ABC” test) for an entity trying to classify workers as independent contractors. This extended California employment laws to many workers.
But gig companies pushed back.

3/ #Prop22 is a multimillion-$$ ballot initiative launched by a handful of gig companies including @Instacart, to create a special interest carveout specifically for gig companies.
If they succeed, workers in the gig grocery workers could face severe financial hardship.

4/ We say #NoOnProp22 because gig workers should be entitled to:
- a minimum wage
- workers compensation
- overtime pay
- paid sick leave
- unemployment benefits
They should also have the right to unionize.

5/ The lack of labor protections allowed companies like @Shipt ( @Target) & @Instacart to pay their gig workers through opaque algorithms that cause unpredictable reductions & fluctuations in pay.
Shoppers often have no idea how much they'll earn by the end of the week.

6/ Over the summer, we spoke with 20+ workers who shop and deliver groceries for a living. Most of them worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, but many fear about their future.

7/ @Shipt's algorithm is based on “effort” but workers say it underestimates the time + energy they put into fulfilling orders.
“I’m working really really hard, only to end up with $100 in my pocket to last me the week” a @Shipt shopper in Long Beach California told us.

8/ A @Shipt shopper in Riverside delivered groceries despite having flu-like symptoms because she couldn't get paid sick leave. She later tested+ for Covid-19 antibodies.
She also lost income twisting her ankle when delivering a heavy grocery box. #workerscomp
