the great meaning behind lose you to love me by selena gomez and why it deserves to get a grammy; a thread
lose you to love me was selena gomez’s comeback. the hype around this song was very huge to the point that everyone was talking about this.
selena reflects on reclaiming herself at the end of a relationship. an hymn about self-love after being destroyed to the one you loved the most. it’s all about healing and finding themselves.
the lyrics is the ruthful expression of the hurt and disillusionment she felt in reflection of the relationship. selena also admitted in an interview: “it would be stupid of me if i didn’t acknowledge what i felt because it would be inauthentic.”
selena also admitted that she wanted this song to be a closing chapter of her past life and that it’s a declaration of herself and an hymn for people who experienced what she experienced.
«because this is an anthem for me, and it’s powerful for me.»
selena admits that the main single was wrapped up in only 2 hours with the help of julia michaels and justin tranter
«i have been in therapy for years, i’ve also taken breaks and gone places to recollect my emotions and my thoughts... it would be inauthentic for me to just not say what i felt.»
«because i was releasing lose you to love me and i thought it was a perfect way to kind of wrap up a chapter and i wanted to show the vulnerability of experiencing the pain of a heatbreak and stepping this into a whole new journey... i did it for me but i did it also for my fans»
«this song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album.» she said. «i want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.»
in the 1st verse, selena talks about her continual investment of energy and emotion into the relationship, only for it to return unmatched. she also saw the signs during the relationship but decided to ignore them because she was blindly in love with her lost one.
“rose-colored glasses all distorted”
selena uses this same metaphor as an allusion to show how she sees her relationship’s true colors, but ultimately disregards the warnings in favor of continuing to live in her fantasy.
“we’d always go into it blindly,” meaning that they continually allowed emotions and impulses to guide their relationship, ignoring the logic and grounded consideration that would strengthen their relationship over time.
"this dancing was killing me softly,” which tells listeners that this relationship dynamic had been going on for awhile as it slowly chipped away at her resolve to make it last.
this verse was completely written by selena gomez herself. in this 2nd verse she is exposing the truth to the public, giving herself an opportunity to tell the truth.
“made me think i deserved it in the thick of healing” selena was feeling guilty during the last years, thinking she was the main reason of the breakup while she was healing from her anxiety, depression and lupus.

selena closes the song with a goodbye, closing a painful chapter in her life. leaving the toxic relationship to find herself, to love herself.
selena admitted recently in an interview that singing “and now it’s goodbye, it’s goodbye for us” killed her.
“i don’t want people to see me as just sad and hurt,” selena gomez says in an interview for the 2021 grammy preview of rolling stones “i experienced something real, and that part of me is over.”
right after its release, "lose you to love me” received widespread acclaim from music critics, who complimented its lyrics, minimal production, and selena’s vocal performance.
chris monlanpy from slate stated "with only piano and selena’s voice, then grows ever more stirring with plucked strings, a choir of backing vocals, and, more than halfway through, a subtle heartbeat thump that's the closest thing to a beat in the whole song."
michelle ruiz, vogue, commended the song, stating, "potentially getting lost in the internet sleuthing of it all, however, is the fact that "lose you to love me" is a highly catchy and searing ballad that deserves to immediately be added to everyone's empowering songs playlist”
craig jenkins of vulture praised its lyrics, noting: "it was a gamble trusting that the lyrics to this song would sell it on their own, but it was a wise one." vulture also named it the second best song of 2019.
it was also nominated one of the best songs of 2019.
lose you to love me didn’t need radio support to chart. it went #1 on both billboard and rolling stones.
«i knew it was special and i’m actually grateful it was my 1st number one because it meant so much to me and it was a very personal song»
selena gomez co-wrote the track, which is her first solo song of 2019, with julia michaels and justin tranter. the track was produced by mattman & robin and finneas, billie eilish's brother and collaborator.
the production is a rising climax that starts from from the piano to adding more instrumentals, exploding in a chorus.
“so many people were involved aside from me and selena — julia, mattman and robin.” says justin tranter. “he brought ambiance and ear candy to the final steps of production,” tranter says ab finneas “that gave it this last little breath of life.”
“we wanted to dig into the message that loving yourself has to always be the priority,” justin tranter explains. “if you deal with your pain correctly, you’re going to come out the other side loving yourself even more. that was the unspoken goal of the song.”
“this song lends a credibility to her as an artist that she has always deserved,” says justin. “i think the whole world sees the artist and musician and storyteller in selena i have seen since the first day we met. and it makes me super-proud to be a part of that process.”
