Today the @CouncilonCJ's National Commission on COVID-19 and Criminal Justice, the #NCCCJ, releases its Recommendations for Response and Future Readiness. Read on. https://counciloncj.foleon.com/covid19/report/welcome/
The #NCCCJ is led by former Attorney Generals @AGLynch and @argonzales, who serve alongside leaders in policing, courts, corrections, community-based advocacy, academia, and public health, including , including @adrianzdiaz, @SheriffEd_HCSO, @T_Inglesby, @Johnson4Dallas...
... @impastormike_, @desmondmeade, @Nelson4SAO, @ColettePeters11, and others. I direct the Commission, alongside @AbbyRWalsh.
The recommendations released today are intended to help criminal justice leaders respond to #COVID19 immediately. Broader recommendations about how the criminal justice system should work in a post-pandemic world will be released by the end of the year.
First, here are key principles to guide #COVID19 decision-making in an uncertain world:
PRESERVE PUBLIC HEALTH: In addition to traditional responsibilities, take all necessary measures to preserve the health and well-being of staff, people under supervision, and the public.
GET THE FACTS: Identify and rely on authoritative sources of guidance and information on COVID-19, its impacts, and effective containment measures, including the @CDCgov, @NIH, @WHO, and @JohnsHopkins coronavirus resource center: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/
BE PROACTIVE: The virus' spread through the criminal justice system has far outpaced the availability of research and data. Given that uncertainty, precautions and responses should, at a minimum, meet – and, ideally, exceed – those recommended to the public at large.
IMPROVE EQUITY, INCREASE INCLUSION: The disparate impacts of criminal justice on racial and socioeconomic groups are well documented. Strive to improve fair treatment of impacted groups and avoid exacerbating unequal outcomes. Include such groups in policy- and decision-making.
Next, here are cross-cutting recommendations that apply to all parts of the criminal justice system:
Finally, read the full report for sector-specific recommendations on policing, courts, corrections, and community-based organizations. We can, and we must, protect public health as we maintain public safety.
