The rest of 🇨🇦 keeps talking about COVID infection rates as if there is no other way to handle it other than playing whack-a-mole with rules and regulations.

The fact is: We have a prototype for what works right here in our own country.
It's the right-hand side of the map! https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/?stat=num&measure=active#a2

Life here is pretty normal these days. We maintain social distancing and mask compliance is high, but there is very little fear in day-to-day life.
The approach to managing COVID has been very different, and I think it has been easy to disregard as an artifact of geography. There is more to it than that. We have small flare ups regularly, but they rarely are able to achieve escape velocity because they are tightly managed.
Anyone who enters one of the 4 provinces on the right-coast must self-isolate for 14 days.

You drive in, you isolate. You fly in, you isolate. You leave and come back? You get to finally watch Game of Thrones, Westworld and The West Wing.
Sounds a bit draconian, right? Nanny state type stuff. I know, I hate it too.

But we started with the requirement early, and it is socially acceptable now. Communities are supportive of those who need to isolate, and there is an OK monitoring system in place.
What it means is that the rest of the measures we take are all just mitigations. Masks, hand washing, social distancing. It's all just "nice to have" and serves as a reminder to everyone that this is still something pretty serious.
What could Canada learn?

Rip off the band-aid! đź©ą

14 to 28 days of drastically limited mobility, with very aggressive testing and social supports for people who need to be quarantined.

If we want a normal life, we need to stop pretending life is going to be normal.
I can promise you it's worth it.

My 70 year old mother can go about her day to day life, see her grand kids and be active in her social circles without fearing for her life.

There is a big difference between pretending life is normal, and actually living a normal life.
I also really want to be able to go skiing out west this winter, so if we could do this before January, that would be great!
