I recently attended a funeral of someone. The deceased was taken to the graveyard. The prayer took place. And after that, we waited for our turns to entomb. During the wait, I just realised something that really shook me then and there.
While I was waiting, I started looking here and there. In search of the people whom I know. The faces whom I am familiar with, so that I can have exchange of a few words with them. The place was a bit crowded, so it was a little difficult to find people.
In that difficulty, suddenly the thought of Qiyamah popped into my brain. And I stopped and started to think. That if this little difficulty in finding familiar faces can cause such problems, then how difficult it will be on the day of judgement. Allahuakbar!
The purpose of finding familiar people was just a little exchange of words and nothing else. But what will be the situation when we will be raised altogether. Where everyone will be for themselves only. Everybody will be screaming "Nafsi! Nafsi!"
And on that day, we won't be looking for a lite exchange of words. But rather we would be running, screaming, looking for someone who could exchange with us their good deeds. Someone who is known to us. Whom we thought to be ours while we were alive.
So this reminded me of the judgement day. Where nobody will be yours. All you'll have is what you used to do before death gripped you, when you were alive, capable of doing things. Those who used to do good will be with happy faces, with a dazzling light on their forehead.
And those who did evil will be with terrified and dull faces. As Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala has said:
"They will say, O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? [The reply will be], This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."
"They will say, O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place? [The reply will be], This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."
This verse from Surah Yaaseen (36:52), clearly describes to us how the evil doers will react on that Day. People will already be panicking. But for the evil doers, everything will be doubled. As first, they were gripped by the torments of the grave. And now, seeing the truth...
... and knowing that they are going into the eternal hellfire and its torments.
Shaykh Al-Qurtubi said: Some of the scholars quoted as evidence to prove the torment of the grave the phrase âThe Fire, they are exposed to it, morning and afternoonâ [Al Ghaafir 40:46].

A similar view was expressed by Mujaahid, âIkrimah, Muqaatil and Muhammad ibn Kaâb, all of whom said that this aayah is proof of the torment of the grave. Do you not see that it says concerning the torment of the Hereafter: âAnd on the Day...
...when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): âCause Firâawnâs (Pharaoh) people to enter the severest torment!â? (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 15/319)
So from here, we know that the one dies in a state of disobedience (doing evil) has their return in their graves.

In another narration, âAbd-Allah ibn âUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: âThe Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: âWhen any one of you dies, he is shown his place morning and evening. If he is one of the people of the Paradise then he is...

So all these narrations imply to us about the punishment of the grave and its severity. We think Qiyamah is when the trumpet is blown. When everyone will be resurrected (from the dead). Ofcourse that's Qiyamah.

But it actually starts from the graves. The difficulty we face in finding familiar faces in crowdy places bothers us so much while we're alive. Imagine what will happen on the Day of judgement!!! Have we given any thought on that??? If not then this is the time. Do your best.
May Allah protect us all from the punishment of the graves, and hellfire. May He reunite us all in Jannah one day. May Allah reward all the readers who spent their precious time in reading this thread. Aameen summa aameen!
