If it were more normalised to have shorter games as standard, like, the majority of videogames were between say the 2-3 hour mark, I wonder what the games industry would look like compared to how it works now
One of the things that I notice surprises people I talk to who don't know much about games is the sheer length of dev time. Even on a short turn around for a dev, you're looking at what, 2 years? The distance between making something and releasing it is so massive
I guess this is a product of the technological foundation of games, the reliance of particular hardware or technology - once you've built a system, you better fucking use it!
Imagine if all AAA devs were making 2 hour videogames, imagine how high quality those games would be and how much easier it would be for them to 1. make them and 2. try new things
The other big impact, I imagine, would be a SIGNIFICANT shift in WHO plays videogames. It would definitely start to skew older and more varied imo. There's a reason games are seen as 'time wasting' to a lot of people, because they take a LOT of time to go through
