Remarkable data from Police Scotland confirms
THE PROBLEM IS NOT STUDENTS AND HOUSE PARTIES!
They were called out to 440 house gatherings.
Less than 10% involved sudents
Only 13 involved more than 15 people.
The huge majority were small gatherings that exceeded the rules.
This data was given to the media and reported in the media... but illustrated with pictures showing large goups of young people at raves. So even when faced with clear evidence, the paper treat the few exceptions as the rule.
What is more, when questionned the majority breaking the rules by having a few too many people round would respond 'we aren't the problem, we aren't having a party. So, the (false) focus on young people and house parties allows others to be complacent.
This confirms a key argument: the focus on young people and on house parties isn't only wrong, it isn't only unfair, it is harmful. It encourages rule-breaking and increases infections. Like everyone else, the media must act responsibly. They must be balanced and accurate.
