Good morning from todays ESPC timewarp. From the outside it looks much like any other Edwardian villa. But what lies behind that red door?
The most modern thing in this room is the 1930s fire surround. Note the traditional floor covering of a large rug, with the floorboards around the edges treated with a dark bituminous stain (which is an absolute *%$($£ to get off)
The kitchen again looks like it hasn't been touched since the 1930s. The range has been replaced with a 1930s "Yorkist combination stove", which was less of a chore to clean and maintain than a full range. The traditional linoleum is still in place.
These doors lead through to a scullery (1) and a maid's room above (2). These were probably some of the last volume-built houses in Edinburgh finished with live-in servants accommodation.
The hallway maybe got a lick of wallpaper and a new lampshade in the 1950s, but again little has changed since the place was built - the original colour scheme was probably darker.
The floor runner looks like the newest thing here. That wallpaper on the right might be 1970s-ish.
To the rear, a drawing room with doors out onto the garden. Again the fireplace is 1930sish, with a later fas fire on top. That light shade was the cause of numerous UFO sightings in Roswell in 1947
Upstairs, a master bedroom or perhaps this was used as another sitting room given the depth and extravagance of the cornicing, with those 1930s-50s fireplaces again. A bell pull next to the fireplace calls your servants.
Definitely a bedroom here - note the much simpler cornincing. Same story with the fireplaces. No that's not a fitted carpet, it's a giant rug that's been hacked to fit the floor.
This is that maid's bedroom, note the private stair down to the kitchen, so that they could be kept apart from the main family, and the less-than-generous fireplace. The décor, polystyrene ceilings and lampshade are about the newest thing in this house.
The bathroom is traditional (although not original) and austere, with a linoleum floor. There looks to be a 3rd tap on the wall, possibly from a back boiler heating system, and an original tile radiator on the right. Plastic drain piping the newest thing in here.
