Here are some things I've learned as an author. [1] You can't just write a book and think you're done. You need to put everything you have into PR; [2] That doesn't mean it'll sell. Or not sell. Most of that is beyond your control; [3] If a reader has a question ... {A}
... you answer. No matter what. If she hates the book. If he loves the book. You answer, because that person has taken to time to read what you've put out into the world and that's an honor; [4] Being published gives you 0 right to have an ego. When you're feeling ... {B}
... cocky go to a bookstore. Or a library. You'll find yourself surrounded by thousands of books. You're not all that special; [5] You will have mistakes in your book. It's almost a guaranteed. Some readers will take tremendous delight in telling you. Handle it with grace ... {C}
... You'll be screaming inside. But handle it with grace. [6] Bookstore events are horrifying. You'll have some with 1 person attending—and he's only there for the carrot plate. It's brutal. But important. Because it reminds one of point No. 4 (see above) ... {D}
[7] You'll likely reach a point when you're mad at your agent for not repping you well, your publicist for not promoting you well, your publisher for not spending enough money on getting the word out. All authors feel this. It's normal. Take a deep breath ... {E}
[8] I just had a book come out in a pandemic. It blows. It's a bit sad. BUT ... celebrate your accomplishment. Whether your book sells 100,000 copies or 10, you created something that exists. You can hold it and beam upon it. So hold it. Beam upon it ... {F}
[9] You'll be jealous of other authors. It's a guarantee. Do your best to suppress that feeling. It's unhealthy. Another writer's success doesn't diminish your accomplishment. We need books to sell—all books. When people are reading, it's a win for the business ... {G}
[10] Lastly, don't be embarrassed to admit you read your own book. Keep a copy by the toilet. Or the sink. Be proud of your achievement. You busted your ass. You devoted your life. Take pride. Feel good. You did it. That's eternal. #
