George Washington not only owned slaves (more specifically, was a deeply repressed deadbeat who married a rich widow who owned slaves), but in Philly (a Free city in a Free state) he brought his slaves instead of hiring servants.
He would cycle them across the bridge to Camden.

After a set amount of time in Philly, his slaves would have automatically become free!
So he used a loophole in the law to MAKE SURE that he could keep his human property, by sending them across state lines.

It is an -utter lie- to think that they didn't understand what they were doing was wrong.
They had friends - OTHER FOUNDING FATHERS - who called them out on this. Other enlightenment thinkers who pointed at the GLARING HYPOCRISY.

My absolute favorite monument in Philly is the "First White House," George Washington's residence. It bears the names of his Slaves.
Overlooking it, across the square, is the National Museum of Jewish American History, with a quote from GW about how we won't tolerate bigotry.
