"They& #39;re not white supremacists, they believe what the founding fathers did!"
My guy, a not insubstantial portion of the founding fathers thought the white race was supreme enough that they could LITERALLY OWN & #39;inferior& #39; races.
THIS IS PERHAPS NOT THE ARGUMENT YOU THINK IT IS.

Yelling it here so I don& #39;t waste brain cells yelling it there, because that motherfucker is never going to hear me.
George Washington not only owned slaves (more specifically, was a deeply repressed deadbeat who married a rich widow who owned slaves), but in Philly (a Free city in a Free state) he brought his slaves instead of hiring servants.
He would cycle them across the bridge to Camden.
He would cycle them across the bridge to Camden.
Why? Oh, simple!
After a set amount of time in Philly, his slaves would have automatically become free!
So he used a loophole in the law to MAKE SURE that he could keep his human property, by sending them across state lines.
Because that& #39;s just the kind of guy he was.

It is an -utter lie- to think that they didn& #39;t understand what they were doing was wrong.
They had friends - OTHER FOUNDING FATHERS - who called them out on this. Other enlightenment thinkers who pointed at the GLARING HYPOCRISY.
They simply chose to ignore it.

Honor your ancestors enough to know who they actually were, not a cartoon of them.
Swear to fuck, y& #39;all.

My absolute favorite monument in Philly is the "First White House," George Washington& #39;s residence. It bears the names of his Slaves.
Overlooking it, across the square, is the National Museum of Jewish American History, with a quote from GW about how we won& #39;t tolerate bigotry.

Museum of American Jewish History*, sorry.
The point stands, though. That& #39;s how you curate a goddamn legacy.
The early United States, while keeping one race in abject debasement, welcomed marginalized peoples (Jews, Muslims). Both are true.
Live with that tension, y& #39;all.

Philadelphia, in its infinite wisdom, not only holds both of those truths up - it makes them face each other, both lit day and night.
Because both are goddamn true.
