Even though mastodon/fediverse culture does its best to separate itself from political and economic conservatism, seeing like 99% of users show themselves off as programmers or artists or whatever in their bio makes me feel like I don't belong there because I'm average at best
And it ends up creating a quasi-capitalist atmosphere. If you don't have some sort of amazing talent that takes years to learn, no one wants to be friends with you on there.
Like maybe that's due to people there internalizing capitalism as mentioned in the root of this thread, but what they might not be aware of is that their need to show off how talented and marketable they are ends up excluding people who "just exist" relative to them.
