I know WFM is all the rage and has so many benefits, but what I am observing is the decay of company culture, especially when companies take on new employees who immediately start working from home. If culture eats strategy for breakfast then this is going to become a problem.
Of course there will be a permanent change in behavior, but I strongly believe that after the pandemic there will be a move back to an office environment for most, not all, companies. The office is the tribe's den, filled with its artifacts, its symbols, opportunities to ramdomly
bump into one another and share stories, gossip, share information, and all other forms of communication that provides stickiness to an organization. Zoom communication with its " Can you hear me?" "You're still on mute" "I have a bad signal" cannot replace the
face to face experience in terms of nuance, and speed of communication. The cost saving and time saving is real for this type of communication, but there is a cost, a hidden cost. And conferences, exhibitions etc; the fun was the randomness of what you see, who you bump into
getting coffee or who you chat to sitting to your left or right. These random encounters are what bees pollinating flowers are to ideas and opportunity pollinating your business.
Ps WFM should read WFH
