1. Irving’s signature in the HMS Terror muster book at the National Archives in Kew! Accessing it is totally free (but send in your request ahead of time), and you can sit and cry over it as long as you want!
2. A mention of Irving in the HMS Volage first mate’s log book, around 1843! Available at TNA in Kew!
3. 106 Princes Street, Edinburgh! John Irving was born and raised here! It was also his dad’s law office!
4. No. 1 North Charlotte Street, Edinburgh! The Irving family moved to this quieter and more upscale house in 1843. John didn’t spend very long in it, though.
5. Irving’s grave at Dean Cemetery! Cry a lot over it! Then go visit some of the nearby Goodsirs and cry some more!
6. The graves of Irving’s parents and some of his siblings at Canongate Kirkyard! They’re right near the front, on the path going right from the front of the church, across from Rizzio’s grave.
7. Sir Colin Scott-Moncrieff at the National Museum of Scotland! Mary Scott-Moncrieff was Irving’s older sister, so Colin is a relative! (If you couldn’t tell from the patented Irving expression of wanting to be literally anywhere else on earth.)
8. Lewis Irving’s signature on the Deed of Demission at the National Museum of Scotland. The Deed formally split the Scottish Kirk apart like a pistachio shell. Irving talks about the split in his letters, mostly to say that he has no idea what’s going on.
9. Archibald Stirling Irving’s poetry at the National Library of Scotland. Free to access with a library card and HIGHLY recommended. Some poems concern his family, and one (or more!) may be about John.
Bonus: This guy. Hard to find. Not always in one place. (I, on the other hand, am very easy to find.)
