Disappointed with how @CityMinneapolis presented their plans for the Hennepin Ave reconstruction. From the beginning, staff talked about how there is only 88 feet of right of way, and how it is simply not enough to fit all needs. Thread 1/6 https://twitter.com/WedgeLIVE/status/1311439573889802240
2/6 I heard the word “tradeoffs” multiple times. The subtext was that 88 feet is not enough to accommodate biking, walking, and transit while also maintaining at least 3 car lanes.
This is 2020. We have an excellent Transportation Action Plan. Excellent mode share goals. This is a major corridor that the City can use to set the gold standard towards how we can achieve our climate and equity goals. 3/6
Our starting point should be incredibly ambitious—physically separated bikeways and high frequency transit lanes, wide sidewalks and the narrowest possible car lanes. 4/6
This is an opportunity to say that we are prioritizing biking, walking, rolling and transit over cars. Instead, we get 3 options that have wide car lanes, with 2 that have no bike lanes at all. This is not bold. This is compromise that perpetuates the car-centric status quo.
We have one shot to make this a street that truly puts people first. Please, let’s take it. 6/6
